Katherine is 300kms south of Darwin as you travel down the Stuart Highway.



Many people drive to Katherine from Darwin. There are three main road-side stops (Adelaide River, Hayes Creek and Emerald Springs) with cafes, fuel, bathroom amenities and some accommodation. The town of Pine Creek, 90km north of Katherine, also provides travellers with amenities and is a short distance off the Stuart Highway. There are also a number of car rental companies in Katherine.


The national Greyhound Australia bus service (link to Greyhound site) stops in Katherine from Darwin, on the way south to Alice Springs via the Stuart Highway or west to the Kimberley via the Victoria Highway.

Rail - the Ghan

Great Southern Rail's Ghan (link to Ghan website) runs through the centre of Australia from Adelaide to Darwin, and Katherine is one of the major visiting destinations.


Airnorth (link to Airnorth website) runs a service connecting Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
