Ngukurr Art Centre is based in a remote community in South-East Arnhem Land, overlooking the Roper River. It is a place where lots of different clans and language groups came together, including Ngalakgan, Ngandi, Nunggubuyu (Wubuy), Wägilak, Ritharrngu, Marra, Alawa, Warndarrang, Rembarrnga, and Mangarrayi.

Ngukurr was established after the floods in 1940s caused the Roper River Mission to relocate to the top of Ngukurr hill. From the top of the hill you can see incredible views of this beautiful country, from the sunsets over the Roper River to the impressive scenery of Walmaja hill.

Ngukurr Arts paintings reflect the artists’ strong connections to their culture and the unique history of this community. Our artists are known for combining their traditional knowledge and connection to country with modern techniques and vibrant colours.
