BACKGROUND

Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre (Godinymayin) in Katherine is the premier arts and culture centre and meeting facility for the Big Rivers Region. It presents events, exhibitions, creative workshops, art markets, and is home to conferences, civic ceremonies, private functions, and more. Founded in 2012, the facilities have a confirmed, active, a nd creative place in the Top End. In 2024, after a $7 million Arts Trail expansion, it will open Australia’s newest outdoor amphitheatre. This is an exciting time for a new Chief Executive to take the helm, after several years of growth, new partnerships, and creative program and infrastructure developments.

Located 314km south of Darwin and 1142km north of Alice Springs, Katherine is a crossroads—a critical centre for servicing the many remote communities across the 360,000  sq  km between Western Australia and Queensland. The Katherine region has a population of just over 24,000, 60% of which identify as Aboriginal. The traditional owners of the land in and around Katherine are the Jawoyn, Wardaman and Dagoman peoples—and 50% of our Board is comprised of representatives from these three groups.

The Big Rivers Region includes the famous Nitmiluk National Park, and has proximity to Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks to the North and Central Arnhem Highway communities to the South and East. The region’s major industries include tourism, horticulture, pastoral, mining, defence and renewable energy. Situated amongst remarkable natural landscapes, nature-based recreation activities are a huge part of the Katherine adventure—camping, fishing, canoeing, bush- walking, hunting, swimming and Outback excursions.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is our organisation’s primary leader, and is responsible for all aspects of our day-to-day activities, people, and public programs. We seek someone skilled in non-profit governance and team management, program development and community partnerships, grant-writing and project administration, and cultural advocacy and advancement. If you have experience achieving positive artistic, economic and social outcomes for an organisation/centre like ours, please consider applying. This is a unique opportunity to take one of the Northern Territory’s leading arts and cultural centres into its next chapter, become part of a wonderful small community, and support all the artists, performers, remote art centres, community leaders, and visitors who are part of what we do.
