An Exhibition by Laurence Rimes in K Space Gallery
Laurence Rimes has lived in the Northern Territory since 2017 and is currently a full time artist based in Nauiyu, Daly River. He earned a Bachelor of Art in Sculpture and Printmaking from Australian National University, and a diploma in secondary education. Previously, and for 25 years, he was employed as as secondary art teacher in Canberra. He was the 2021 winner of the Katherine Art Prize here at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre, and has shown his work at Queanbeyan Artist Shed, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, ANCA Studios, and other institutions.
“We are really thrilled to welcome Laurence Rimes back to Godinymayin to present his careful, quiet, and captivating paintings and mixed-media works this dry season,” said Chief Executive Eric Holowacz. “A visit to our K Space will reveal various scenes of life in Daly River, sketches and glimpses of landscape, and unique depictions of Territory life.”
This exhibition in our K Space Gallery features work produced over the past five years—with a firm focus on the landscape and people in Nauiyu and Wadeye. The recent art—including paintings on panels and found objects—is inspired entirely by the Northern Territory and the natural world and surroundings in the Big Rivers Region. About this exhibition, he says:
In 2017 I lived in Wadeye, and made friends and connected with traditional owners in the region. As an artist this presented a unique opportunity to paint the landscape and people I met. The paintings are done on heavy cardboard and found objects, and record my impressions of place—and the essence of Northern Territory colours and life in this area. By using found objects from Wadeye, the subject becomes more embedded in the object—and given another layer of meaning. Using only a very limited palette also allows me to concentrate the image. Life in the Northern Territory is full of action, colour and light. I have endeavoured to capture this in these paintings and this exhibition.
