More than 1000 Australian lives were saved or improved through organ transplants in 2011, representing a 30% increase on Australia’s rate over the past two years.

Organ and tissue donation and transplantation is a ‘gift of life’ to young people, old people and people in-between.

It can transform their lives and that of their families.

However much work needs to be done to open up the conversation about and lessen the taboos that surround organ donation.

Educating the community about the difference organ donations can make to the lives of thousands of Australians is important.

Organ donation and transplants are particularly important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The rate of renal failure for Indigenous Territorians is ten times the national average, yet the rates of transplants for Indigenous Territorians is 10% lower than the national average.

Ben Graetz, the writer of the show will be in Katherine for the show and he and the actors will be available for discussion at the conclusion of the event.

The Gift of Life is a show that is important to all the community.
