Mary Kunyi[1] (1925–2005) was one of the first settlers of the Daly River mission. This exhibition will, for the first time ever, bring major works by Mary Kunyi together from collections across the country to highlight the significance of her contribution to Australian Indigenous Art History as well as her contribution to the now iconic artistic style of the Daly River region. The exhibition will also feature works from artists who have been influenced by Kunyi, including family members who are current Nauiyu Daly River artists Troy Mardigan and Kieren Karritipul. This exhibition is being produced in partnership with Mary’s family and Merrepen Arts. Curated by Dr Cathy Laudenbach.
[1] Variations of surname spelling include Kunji, Kungi, Kunnyi, Kaangi, Kanirr and Kanngi
